Why We Love This Dress:
I was heartbroken when we lost Alber Elbaz to COVID last year. In his obituary for The New York Times Elian Peltier and Vanessa Friedman wrote this of Alber:
Beloved not only by his celebrity clients like Meryl Streep and Natalie Portman but also by his peers, Mr. Elbaz was that rare character in fashion: a truly empathetic and generous designer, both in the clothes he made and in the way he conducted himself within the business. The graceful lines of his dresses mimicked the graceful lines of his life.
I loved him as a designer with his chic and feminine clothes and his use of color. But I fell in love with him as a human being after watching a video in 2014 where he talked openly about his loneliness and vulnerability (I’ve attached a link to it below). He said he was basically a workaholic and the only place he felt comfortable was at work. Seeing his humanity just made me adore his clothes even more.
This dress is special because it is identical to the dress worn by Natalie Portman at the Toronto Film Festival. Natalie Portman was one of his muses and she wore his designs many times. In 2007 when Alber was named to Time’s The Most Influential People in the World’s list, Natalie Portman penned a tribute for him saying in part:
But it is his time as designer at Lanvin that has earned him a seat among fashion legends. His pieces, he says, reflect the many hats a woman might wear during a single day: mother, lover, executive, partygoer.
He designs according to what he learns from his clients and so accurately intuits what will make a woman feel good in her body—and even better when swathed in an awe-inspiring dress.
I found this dress the morning of Alber Elbaz’s death.
Description: This is a flirty and sexy cocktail or party dress. It’s a beautiful textured print composed of magenta and green and with the exposed seams that was one of Alber’s signatures. The dress is 100% silk. The flower is linen with glass beads.
Why This is Worthy of Your Invesment: One of Alber’s Lanvin dresses is always a good investment. If you love strapless and color, this would be perfect for you. You could style it in different ways, too. One way is to style it the way that Natalie Portman did with nude pumps to show off her legs and her hair up with just some earrings to dust her shoulders. For a slightly more dressed-down look, you could wear a colored tight (red, purple) with platforms and a jeans jacket.
Condition: Excellent.
Measurements:
Labeled Size French 36, Size US 4
30-32” chest
24-25 1/2” waist
34-36” hips
27” length
